Meet Dr. Corinne Harpster, our new pediatric focused naturopathic physician

    July 10, 2014

    Hello everyone!

I am Dr. Corinne Harpster, the pediatric focused naturopathic physician here at SageMED. One of my favorite things I get to do as a doctor is called the ‘meet and greet’ where I get to meet new and expectant parents to find out if I am the right fit for them and their growing family. There is an excellent list of questions available at the Baby Center to ask your prospective physician, you can check it out here. I have answered some of these questions in the video (above), special thanks to my family for helping me make this video!

Some pertinent information from this video:

Dr. Corinne Harpster is a naturopathic physician who does primary care for families in the Factoria area of Bellevue. She takes most major insurance. She specializes in pediatrics, women’s health, herbal medicine, massage therapy and gut health including being a certified GAPS practitioner.

Dr. Corinne is in the office on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and is available for emergencies via her pager 24/7. If you or your family need to be seen on a day she is not in the office you can see one of the other naturopathic physicians at SageMED. Dr. Corinne is currently the only naturopath who specializes in pediatrics at SageMED.

She is a strong supporter of breastfeeding but if this is not an option she can help you and your baby with the healthiest bottle feeding possible.

She has prescriptive rights for pharmaceutical medications such as antibiotics but uses herbal medicine, nutrition, supplements and life style modification much more frequently in her patient encounters.

She works with families on an individual basis on their health and this includes vaccines, as well. Rest assured that your child and their particular circumstances and health will be taken into account when suggestions are made about vaccinations. Every family will be well educated about vaccines and will be empowered to make the best choices for their family. Vaccinations are available through Dr. Corinne’s practice.

Dr. Corinne has a wonderful husband and amazing daughter loves babies and looks forward to meeting your family and helping you to realize your healthiest self.

You can connect with Dr. Corinne on her website at www.doctorcorinne.com where she writes about natural health, cooking and the GAPS diet. You can also follow her on Facebook: www.facebookcom/doctorcorinne

  • How to have a healthy, happy summertime with your kids!

Hello friends, next Tuesday, 7/1/14 I will begin seeing patients at my new location at SageMED in the Factoria area of Bellevue, WA.  Please enjoy my newest blog post about how to have a healthy, happy summertime with your kids.

Summer is my favorite time of year, I especially love the heat! Even I get a little overheated sometimes, though so I make teas from naturally cooling herbs called refrigerants. These herbs include: Mints, Hibiscus, Lemongrass and Chickweed. A favorite mix of mine is Hibiscus with just a tiny bit of lemongrass and spearmint. Yum!

I’d love to hear about your favorite herbal medicine you use with your family.  One of our favorite summer time treats is peppermint/licorice tea popsicles. Delicious!

  • Resolutions For 2014: Weight Loss

    Resolutions For 2014: Weight Loss

I must admit something: I really, really enjoy making resolutions every year. In general I keep part of my resolutions, but not all of them. Once I -did- complete a whole year of a resolution: floss every day. I was very proud of myself (and still am… maybe I should do that one again this year) for actually completing one of my resolutions 100%.

The major issue I have found with creating a resolution is that most of the time a PLAN is never put into play. So your pie-in-the sky “This year I will lose 30 pounds, clean out all my closets, read 100 books, teach myself Japanese and grow my own tomatoes” will never, ever happen without a plan of action. I am not saying anything you don’t already know.

A great way to plan for these items is to break down the goal into much, much smaller items on a daily or weekly basis. For a “this year I will lose 30 pounds” goal I would suggest all of the following: (Please note: the best way to lose weight is to change your diet, increase your daily exercise and decrease stress. My suggestions below are all about changing your diet. For help with exercise please see these posts. For stress reduction I highly suggest meditation, exercise such as Yoga or Tai Chi, spending time outside, counseling if indicated and breathing exercises.)

Start recording all your foods and liquids you eat and drink DAILY: you can do this in a notebook you carry with you, through photos on your digital camera or smart phone, on an Excel program, or on an online program like myfitnesspal.com or MyPlate.

    SAM_2009

I am not going to tell you what diet will work best for you as I would need to know a lot more about you as an individual and your personal health history. Some diets that work well for people include the Mediterranean Diet  or a more generic whole foods diet. My family follows a diet known as the Weston A Price diet which is based on whole foods including traditional foods like healthy whole fats, fermented foods (this includes fruit, vegetables, dairy and even meat) as well as organ meats and traditionally prepared seeds and grains. Good news: you don’t have to be devoted to a particular diet, just eat nourishing, whole foods that are nutrient dense.

Also, you may need to change your mindset: One of the things I think is really important to keep in mind is how we view our food intake: “Asked what comes to mind upon hearing the phrase “chocolate cake,” Americans were more apt to say “guilt,” while the French said “celebration”“.

You also need to figure out where you might ‘fall down’ on your resolution and create alternatives: what if you use chocolate as your response to stress? Do you think just because you have resolved to lose weight that you will magically no longer be stressed or no longer reach for chocolate as your stress response? I am sorry to say this, but you are mistaken. You need something instead of chocolate as your stress response. I like the idea of drinking chocolate tea instead of eating or drinking sugary chocolate. You still have the chocolate goodness, but without all the calories. If you have a particular place in your fridge or pantry where you keep your snacks/foods you reach for during stress I highly suggest you stock this place with healthy alternatives like raw almonds, fresh fruit and veggies and protein like organic cheese. If you wanted to you could also put an affirming message to yourself there along with some suggestions for things to do when stressed.

Celebrate! Maybe you LOVE wheat spaghetti but you’ve decided to follow a Paleo diet and the idea of giving up your favorite food forever is making you resistant to a diet. What if the last Saturday of every month you got to go out for a special spaghetti dinner? You can be happy focusing on your Paleo diet without that nagging feeling of never eating your favorite food ever again. A few keys to this: be mindful and really, really enjoy your meal, don’t bolt down your food: celebrate your full month of achievement! Don’t bring home leftovers; this is a once a month thing, not a ‘and tomorrow’s lunch and then tomorrow’s dinner…’ thing. If you eat a really clean, whole foods diet the rest of the month you may be surprised at how you feel after such a dinner so pay attention to how you feel during and after your meal. Or maybe you are going to get a massage at the end of every month. Your turn: make a list of things that will reward you on your path in a healthy and constructive way.

“But Dr Corinne, I have done all of these things and I am not losing any weight!” This may very well be an indicator that you have some underlying health issues and you should definitely see a health practitioner for support with this. I would be happy to work with you on this and other health challenges.

If you would like help or support around changing your diet, increasing exercise, decreasing stress or any other health related resolutions this year I would love to help you, schedule an appointment with me today! You can call 425-814-0202 to schedule.

  • What a Naturopathic Doctor’s Family Eats in One Week

What a Naturopathic Doctor’s Family Eats in One Week

Have you seen those photo journalist pictures of what different families around the world eat in one week’s time? I am fascinated by them, myself. So I revisit the idea every few years or so. This is what my family of three (me, my husband and my young daughter) will eat in one week’s time:

One week's worth of groceries for a Naturopathic Doctor's family of three.

  • Red Bean and Quinoa Chili For Your Freezer

This is one of our all time favorite dishes in our family. We make it when it’s cold and rainy out, or when the food budget is a bit tight or for friends who are having babies or need food for one reason or another. A great way to make this chili is to do a double batch and then freeze dinner-sized portions for times when you are in need of something quick but delicious. It comes from the fantastic cookbook Feeding the Whole Family by Cynthia Lair, one of my professors from naturopathic medical school. I have modified it just a bit (see * below).

  • PMS Relief

    PMS Relief

Premenstrual Syndrome, aka PMS. For many women these three little letters are representative of a lot of misery and source of dread. I want to let you know that it doesn’t have to be that way. I have some great suggestions for improving symptoms and turning that unhappy week into a much more manageable one.

Many moons ago the magazine Delicious Living asked me to contribute to some content on what women could do for PMS, you can see that article here.  There was a lot more information that I wanted to share, though and I thought I’d do that today. (Questions from the journalist are in blue.)

I would like to get an herbalist’s perspective on the most effective ways to fight symptoms of PMS. What do you recommend to your patients?
It really depends on the picture that the patient presents with. There are several different things that can go into PMS. For a tailored treatment regimen I would highly suggest contacting a licensed naturopathic doctor or herbalist. *If you have any special
considerations such as nursing, prescription drug use, liver disease or other health issues it is of the utmost importance that you consult a licensed healthcare practitioner before taking any herbs or supplements.

A few of the herbs I would suggest are: (more…)

  • Episode 3 of How to Live a More Healthy Life (Finding Time to Exercise Edition)

How to get over “I don’t have enough time” syndrome.

So yes, many of us are very busy. But here’s the thing. Everyone, that’s right, everyone has 168 hours in his or her week.

So that means what? It means that instead of “I don’t have time” what you mean to say is “It’s not a priority.” What IS the priority? I have noticed that for a lot of us things like cleaning, ‘puttering around the house’, shopping and television become priorities because we aren’t paying attention. Do you really need to watch 6 hours of television a day? Do you really need to organize your spice drawer again? Is looking at the Old Navy catalog for the nth time really that important? What if we kicked taking care of ourselves up the priority ladder?  I did a time management diary for myself a year ago and I was surprised at where I was spending a lot of my time. I used that information to re-prioritize things.

I rediscovered 2 hours a day that I had lost to things like checking Facebook and watching television I didn’t actually like. And 2 hours: that adds up! 14 hours a week of potential!

‘Finding’ extra time in your day creates a whole new horizon of possibilities.
